Wayman J. Johnson, formerly of Great Bend, died July 9 at his home in Topeka. Born March 15, 1956, at Winfield, he was the son of Harry L. and Velma J. (Loudd) Johnson. He graduated from Great Bend High School in 1974, and graduated from Washburn University, Topeka, with multiple bachelor's degrees. He had been a resident of Topeka for the last 22 years.

Mr. Johnson taught junior high and high school history and geography, and taught special needs children, at Landon Middle School, Robinson Middle School and Topeka High School for the last 15 years. Before that, he owned and operated the Great Bend Karate Institute in Great Bend. He was a detective for the Great Bend Police Department for several years, having attended the Law Enforcement Training Center in Hutchinson. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Great Bend.

Survivors include his mother; two brothers, Damian C. Johnson and Dwight Johnson; three sisters, Myrtle Whitmore, Carmen Dilonga, and Valerie Jean Johnson; numerous nieces and nephews, and many foster brothers and sisters. His father preceded him in death in November of 1986.
